10 Years of Mental Health Progress – With Work to Be Done

On May 3, the Children’s Mental Health Campaign honored
legislators and policy makers who were instrumental in the passage of groundbreaking mental health policy over the last decade. Emceed by MSPCC President and CEO Marylou Sudders, the event
recognized former Governor Paul Cellucci, Lt. Governor Tim Murray, DMH Commissioner
Barbara Leadholm, Senators Fred Berry and Steven Tolman and Representatives Ruth Balser, Kay Khan, Liz Malia, Ellen Story and Angelo Scaccia. Former State Representative Nancy Flavin and former State Senator Bob Bernstein were also honored.
Ten years ago, the alliance between a coalition of mental health advocates including MSPCC, then-Governor Paul Cellucci and the Legislature resulted in the passage and enactment of revolutionary legislation. For the first time, certain mental health diagnoses would have to be covered by insurance companies in the same way and at the same level as any other medical issue.
As the group acknowledged the progress that has been made, they also acknowledged that more work still needs to be done to improve the access and the quality of mental health care in the Commonwealth.
